In a 2,100 word Miami Herald (10/7, Futterman) opinion piece, Miami teacher Laurie Futterman outlines why it is so difficult for US schools to attract and retain good teachers. Futterman says that low salaries, lack of respect and prestige, and lack of autonomy all contribute to teacher shortages that are growing across the nation. Futterman cites another article that pointed out that the US offers more support to soldiers when we are losing a war, but cuts support for teachers when schools are not performing well. Futterman says that society should offer teacher more support because what they do is so important.
