More San Francisco Area Schools Adding Social Emotional Learning To Curriculum.

The Contra Costa (CA) Times (10/5, Mattson) reports more schools in the San Francisco Bay Area are adding social emotional learning (SEL) to the curriculum. The SEL lessons aim to “teach students how to get along with others in a group, how to handle anger, frustration, disappointment, anxiety, and other negative emotions.” The article demonstrates the trend with a lesson at Redwood Shores Elementary School. A first grade teacher “read a book to the class about a boy who a poor listener while the children shared how it made them feel when people didn’t listen to them.” The SEL curriculum is now taught at schools in Palo Alto, Redwood City, San Jose, Sunnyvale, and other Bay Area schools.
